Troy Boy

Following the announcement that White Lodge were to close the rescue, Gill and I decided that we would take on another Beast if needed. Well, guess what, the offer of a home for a hound was not refused. In fact Claire had one in mind - Troy.

So yesterday we all went up to White Lodge and met Troy. The short version is he came home with us.

Troy

As you will perhaps have seen on his CV, Troy has had four homes in three years, spending most of that time in kennels, for a variety of reasons:

He was returned from two for not responding to recall (greyhounds are renowned for selective deafness); another he was taken back from after the ladies abusive husband turned up again and started on him; and the other he came back from because (now read carefully 'coz this is unbelievable) he stood up in the back of the car and they couldn't see out the back window, and he wandered up the road when they left the door open when getting shopping from the car!!

Claire brought Troy out to meet us in the paddock, and left us to it as she had someone else looking at dogs the time. Troy was muzzled just to make sure, but as everyone seemed to be getting on OK it soon came off. A couple of minutes later he was off the lead, and everyone got on brilliantly; even Monty was fine with him (he was a bit wary when Jack arrived).

Claire told us that Troy isn't the most intelligent of hounds, but that he is a total softy and just wants affection from people. It seems that while at the kennels Troy has been a bit of a boring dog, which is perhaps why no-one has chosen him. In my experience a dog in rescue rarely shows its true personality, which only comes out when it feels relaxed in a home.

Because of the lack of stability in his life, Claire wanted him to go somewhere he stood a good chance of staying (I think there's a complement in there somewhere). She did ask us if we wanted to think about it, but what the hell, we were there, so was he, we were going, so he might as well too. However, he is currently on loan just in case (like he's going back!!).

When we left I got the feeling that Claire was a bit sad to see him go.

From White Lodge we went to Sywell Country Park. This is a really nice 2½ mile walk. Because it's totally enclosed the hope was we could let Troy off and see how he got on. But it was such a nice day and too many people were out, so it was just not the right time. But we did stop 'coz one youg lady (about 3 or 4 I would guess) wanted to stroke the dogs. We knew that Kai, Monty, and Jack were OK (albeit that Jack tries to kiss eveyone), and Troy proved himself as well.

When we got home Troy of course investigated the garden, the rooms, everything. I guess the good thing was that it all smelt of the people and dogs he had been with all day. And after some food all four just crashed.

Today it's much the same; everyone's just chilled. It's almost as if he's always been here.

The future of WLLD

Well, from being asked to be a trustee of the WLLD charity (White Lodge Long Dogs - the rescue as distinct from the boarding kennels) at the start of the month at Uppingham Show, to getting the feeling that all was not as it should be on the dog walk, to this :-

So the time has come to realise it has to come to an end. We have one dog left on our waiting list, which we will accept when we have room. That dog will be the last one in; once the last dog is rehomed, then we are going to close the rescue.

The above is an extract from an e-mail sent out by Claire. To say I was gob-smacked would be the understatement of the year; and saddened too. Hounds in need have lost a good ally.

I guess I should say that White Lodge Boarding Kennels and Cattery is continuing as normal, it is only the rescue that is closing.

White Lodge Walk

Today was the monthly White Lodge Walk; at Rutland Water - Normanton. I went on my own, human-wise that is - I had the Beasts with me of course (kind of the whole point really), as Gill was busy watching her beloved Arsenal in their opening match of the season against Newcastle (2-0 to Arsenal, which meant she was in a good mood).

Not the best turn-out ever as the the weather was naff. Lynne and Colin returned from their weekend camping break as they had been rained on that hard.

As always though, a good chat with the people that where there; kind of get the impression that all is not well at White Lodge, at least from the rescue side, though Ian did ask if Gill and I were up for being trustees - which we are. We shall see.

Uppingham Show

Today was Uppingham Show, and another White Lodge day out. Gill didn't think there were going to be that many people on the stand, but as it turned out, the world and his/her dog were there.

The day was sunny with cloud and from time to time, a bit breezy. As the show ground is at the top(ish) of a hill, when the sun went in it was a bit chilly to start with, but the breeze did drop off and the cloud disappear, so it turned out a nice afternoon.

The nice thing about the Uppingham Show from Monty's point of view was that he neither got a bash on the bonce, or had to listen to a marching band (see Oakham Carnival or Monty's Bad Day Out.

My hair, still blue/black from Claire and Gary's party, continued to cause amusement among those assembled, particulary Julie.

It seems (and shows how much I know) that 1) there's a committee to run the rescue side of White Lodge, and 2) they are now so successful that they need to become a charity as they raise so much money.

I suppose it should have been obvious that there is a committee; after all, things don't just happen. Anyway, point of this is that Gill and I were asked if we would like to become trustees of the charity, as they are looking for responsible people (shows you can fool some of the people some of the time). And of course we would as hopefully it would help out with the running of things by taking some of the strain (boring admin etc.) off Claire and Gary and the others who put shed loads of time in.

So what of the show? All in all it seemed to be a good day with £180 raised, a hound rehomed subject to home visit, and we got the chance to parade the hounds round the ring and for Claire to give a bit of spiel about White Lodge and the work they do.
