Good Day - Sunshine

Second Sunday of the month means White Lodge walk, and today was no exception. The exception compared to recent walks and other events is that rether than being cold and wet, it was hot and sunny. This month we were at Beacon Hill, a Beastly Beast favourite. It was Maple's first time here, but she enjoyed it too.

For once dad got us there just about on time; usually we're way early or a bit late. Today we followed Gary - with Dodger - and Angela - with Nikko and Sky - into the car park. Where we waited, and waited. In fact, the bottom car park was eerily empty given that it was such a nice day. Then two hounds came bounding across the car park from where the cars come in, Woody and Harry, followed by their mum Sue; they had escaped from the car while she was putting money in the machine, and just wanted to come and see us.

So that was 10 hounds and assorted humans. Then, just as we were about to set off, two more hounds and humans appear, Nix and Fez with Ron and Megan (different Megan from the lady that did our makeover). They had parked in the top car park and walked down to see if there was anyone else in the bottom one. And so a small but intrepid band set off for the summit of Beacon Hill.

Now, I may only be a hound, but there is something I just don't quite get. Last time we were here, which was February, it was horrible. Personally one would rather have been at home curled up in front of the fire. But there were loads of hounds and humans. Today, warm and sunny, there's just 10 of us and 6 of them. Could someone explain how that works then?

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm complaining, but gosh, it was warm climbing up Beacon Hill. To start with it was great as were in the woods. But once we left them the sun was warm. I admit to flagging a bit near the top, as did Sky. Gary took Troy to keep Dodger company, and as always Troy had to get to where he was going; he led all the way to the top.

The top. A nice breeze and more hounds!! Perhaps sensibly some had decided to join us from the top car park. And the nice thing was they had brought along some water. Thank you to all those very nice people.

While we were at the top, Jasper's dad took a pic of us with dad. I think Maple might be camera shy 'coz she kept hiding; but here we are.

Japser had been in the wars. Cut his leg for the second time in the same place before the stitches from the last cut had been taken out. Ouch!! Even our walking disaster zone, Jack, likes to leave two or three months between accidents.

Before I start on the downward path, I would once again urge you dear reader to compare and contrast the scenes from today with those from February, and to ponder of the sanity of the human species as they obviously prefer the rain.

Saying "Goodbye" to those that joined us at the top, and Nix and Fex 'coz that's where they'd started, we set off down the hill. Usually we go down the direct route. Today we took the slightly longer path. A good choice. We knew from the signs that there was beef on the hoof, but what we didn't know until we saw it was that the beef had big horns. I'm sure that the beef would have lazed in the sunshine even if we'd walked past, but you know what they say about discretion and valour.

Down at the bottom we saw some deer in the distance. Angela said she didn't think they were. In fact her words were "No dear, they're not deer." Once we had established that they indeed were, dad's ripost was "Well dear, you had no idea they were deer." And so it continued accompanied by groans from Gary and Sue. I do hope Dad and Angela don't give up their day jobs for a life in comedy - us hounds could go hungry.

Back at the car park it was time for the usual refreshments, ice creams for humans and liver cake for hounds; yum.

So a really nice day, even if there were not so many of us around. The only thing that was not so good was the news that Dodger and Suzie are still looking for their forever homes. It seems the people that came to see them at the Melton Show haven't worked out. Let's hope it happens for them soon.

Bye for now,
Kai
