Maple has gone to the Bridge
Maple died this evening out on our walk. It was all very sudden and I'm sure she didn't suffer. She was running around, then seemed to stumble. By the time I got to her she wasn't breathing. I tried to revive her, but nothing.
The other Beasts were really good and waited while I tried.
She is now underneath the peach tree in the garden.
It seems so unfair; she would have been 8 in just over a week, and only had one year of real happiness. I suppose the only consolation is that she did have that year.
I hope that where ever she is there is a forest to play in and a beach to run on, and friends to do it with.
Run free Maple.

I am so so sorry. What a tragic thing to happen. However, Chris, she spent the most wonderful year with you and found the sort of love that many dogs don't get in a whole lifetime. Be proud that you enabled her to die a happy dog!
Much love to the other Beasts and I'll be thinking of you all at this sad time.
I'm so sorry to hear about Maple, what a terrible shock for you all.

So tragic that Maple had such a sort time with you all, but I'm willing to bet it was the best twelve months of her life. Savour every memory.

Thank you to everyone that has left comments, both here and on various forums, about Maple. I was amazed at just how many people seemed to know her and the other Beasts.
It was a shock on Tuesday, and to be honest the reality didn't hit home until Wednesday. It's all the stupid things - like only having to get five lots of food ready instead of six. When I worked at home Maple always laid on the sofa in the office gently snoring. Yesterday the sofa was empty.
But she did have a good year, did loads of things and went loads of places, and definitely enjoyed being a Beast. We enjoyed watching her discover that being a Beast is great fun (same for any hound that's loved and cared for). We will always have loads of great memories of her (one of the nice thing about BeastBlog is that we wrote alot of them down), and while she might be gone she won't be forgotten.
I'm so sorry. I'm glad she had the opportunity to spend a year with the other Beasts.
Just wanted to say how sorry I am. She had a great life with you and you must have some wonderful memories of her.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
What a wonderful year you, Gill and the Beasts provided for Maple. She died doing what she loved best - running around sniffing. Apart from being with you longer, what more could she have asked for? Its such a shock for her to go so suddenly and my heart goes out to you. Sarah, the girls and W.C Mortimer xxx
