Raised ALT - The Results Are In

And they're not good.

As you propbably know, when I gave blood back in April the tests found a raised ALT level, which could mean something is wrong with my liver. I had another test at our vet and that showed the same. I took some pills that were 'sposed to help and went back for another test on Monday; the results arrived this morning - it's got worse.

On my first blood test my ALT number was 315. Apparently for most dogs it's about 120, but PPBuk reckon from the dogs they see that greyhounds might have slightly higher levels than that. Anyway, up to 150 is sort of OK, up to 200 is take note but don't worry.

The latest test came back with 449!!

And they tested for something called GLDH (Glutamate dehydroqenase); which was also high - and that does not seem to be good news.

One result was better; my ALP (Alkaline Phosphate) level had dropped.

But the note at the bottom of the results said:
"Elevated ALT and GLDH are liver specific and indicate heptocellular damage and necrosis. Possible causes are include hepatitus, trauma or diffuce infiltrative disease.

There is no evidence of hepatic functional impairment, however a bile acid stimulation test may provide further infomration.
"

I think that means that my liver seems to be working OK at the moment, but something's not quite right.

Our vet suggested another test in a couple of months, and if that is still bad then we might have to think about what to do next.

I'm getting a bit worried.

This is very worrying and I really hope that something can be done to treat this condition.

Thinking of you all. XX

Hi Monty,
Sorry your test results weren't good. We're all thinking of you here on the farm and I'm saving you some rabbits to chase when you come on your hols.

Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts.

I guess I should say that I feel absolutely great, and enjoy what every greyhound should enjoy - running, sleeping, eating, sleeping, playing with my toys, sleeping and having a cuddle with mum and dad - ohh, and sleeping.

Monty mate, as long as youre living life to the full and enjoying all that sleeping (running around seems like hard work!), eating and playing, what more could you wish for? - first post by W.C. Mortimer
