Monty - Back Home
I had a good chat with the vet when I collected him and saw the X-rays of before and after. You could clearly see the fragments of bone and the bones had slid over one another, made worse apparently because Monty is such a fit dog that his muscles pulled the bones up and over one another. Due the fragmentation of the radius there was a large gap between the two ends of the fracture and a bone graft from his shoulder was needed so there is material for the bones to fuse to and stimulate bone growth.
He has two metal plates that will stay in for life. The one on the radius runs pretty much from elbow to wrist and right now is all that is supporting the leg. The plate on the ulna is not as long, but this had a clean fracture so will mend much quicker and does not take so much weight.
The vet said that this had been a severe, challenging and interesting injury to work on (I'll try to make his life as boring as possible in future) but the prognosis is good. He also said that Monty had been the model patient and, his words, is a fantastic dog. I agree with the last part of course, but I think it's the nature of greyhounds to be stoical and well behaved in adversity.
Monty has dressing from wrist to elbow, a nice purple, again the vets words, to match the rest of his leg - he's a wag that one. Monty is on antibiotics and a combined pain relief/anti-inflammatory. We are back to the vet on Wednesday for a check up and hopefully removal of the dressing. Exercise is limited to on lead for a wee and number 2, and probably will be for at least six weeks. Then it will only be gentle on lead walks. For pretty obvious reasons, running, jumping, climbing stairs, playing with the others are all streng verboten!
I didn't see how the injury happened, but the amount of bruising and the severity of the fracture means the Monty is probably lucky that a broken leg is all(?) he ended up with.
Tonight it's rest, some tea, and more rest.

So glad that Monty is home and that the operation was successful. I have much admiration for our orthopaedic vets. I'm sure that your brave boy will relish all the TLC and attention that he will be getting during his recovery period! Please give him a big kiss from me! XX
Well Monty, what a few days you, your humans and fellow Beasts have had! Glad to hear you're back home and on the mend, but I don't think trying to run up the garden is such a good idea at the moment! Hope you make a speedy recovery in a slow way, if you get my meaning!
Lot of love, hugs and cuddles to you from me and mine xxx
