Sidereal with Rosie

Hiya,

Can you believe it's been a whole year since I arrived at The Beastly Beasts? It seems to have gone so quickly, but I seem to have done loads as well. Dad says that I've turned out be a bit of a star, which is nice. That I'm here, and hence still alive, is thanks to some very special ladies who decided I deserved another chance and sorted out that it was The Beastly Beasts that gave it to me.

The day I met Kai and Monty

I admit it; I was a bit of a cow a year ago. When I first met Kai and Monty I was a bit of cow, but they gave me another chance and I decided it was the smart thing to tek it. It weren't easy at first; dad don't stand for no nonsense like and weren't best pleased with my dramatics - I soon lost count of the telling-offs I got. But thing was, when I was good I was given hugs and cuddles and told I was a good girl. Now, I might've been a cow bit I int stupid, though I did come to realise what a daft bugger I'd been.

See, to start with I figured it was every hound for his/herself. So like when we were out and I was having a sniff I didn't like it when the others came over; even nipped Mack on the nose once. Oh boy, was that the thing not to have done? If you've never been on the end of one of dad's telling-offs I'd suggest you keep it that way; that one was a doozey.

The other thing was that even if I'd been naughty the day before I still got to go out with everyone the next day. It was like take the rap there and then and tomorrow was another chance and nothing phased dad or the others.

So I was wrong about having look out for number one - very wrong. We all get to share everything, and know what? It's much more fun that way. Now we do communal sniffs and figure out who what and where. And we get group hugs and now I don't get told off - well, hardly ever. And when I do it's usually 'coz I'm trying to get Kai to play and when dad says to leave him I do 'coz it saves a lot of bother that way.

So now being with The Beastly Beasts is a reet laff. As I'm sure you know our favourite place to go out to is Salcey Forest, but we get to go to loads of other places with loads of other hounds too and I'm realising that even with strangers I don't need to look out for myself 'coz dad does all that. And we do lots of things like go to shows and Meet and Greets and ..., well never a dull moment.

Here's some of things I've done in the last year:

Well, first one is not anything I did, but I got - like all the other Beasts - a Lane sweater. That I got one even though I'd only just arrived started to make me realise I was part of the team.

Rosie in her Laney Jumper

We went to the Gap Show. Dad said that was my first big test and I did OK. I remember I had to wear a muzzle though.

Then we went to an amazing place - Swallows Dance - on holiday. There are fields and beaches and sea and I got to meet Waj (swoon) and Uncle Trevor who told me I was dead pretty.

Next new thing was the White Lodge Walk in October. There was loads of hounds and they all just chilled with one another and some of the other Beasts went off to walk with other hounds - it was all very strange, but nice.

Soon after that I became a blood donor. I thought the others were dissin' me about it, but now I've done it three times. It's no big deal and it's nice to know we've helped dogs that really need it.

Then I had a go at agility and I loved it. I've not done as much of that as I'd like, but I hope to do some more.

We did some Meet and Greets before Christmas. They were a reet laff. Me Troy and Mack had competitions to see who could get the most humans. We lost count so called it evens.

Christmas day was, well, a bit overwhelming. We had so many pressies and food I didn't know what to do. Got a better idea for this year though.

There's been loads more walks, more blood doning, another Gap show and even another holiday to Swallows Dance. By now I didn't have to wear a muzzle when I went out; I can't tell you how nice that was. On one of the walks I met a human puppy with the same name as me - this is me with Rosie.

Rosie X2

I've started skool. That's kind of good fun. There's lots of other dogs there and some do make me a bit scared, but dad always looks after me and realise that they aren't really scary after all.

And where I go to skool we all went to see some Cubs and Scouts and they all thought we were really nice. We thought they were all nice too.

I've also been in shows and won some prizes which made feel proud. And I've done my assessment as a PAT dog which is where you go and get patted by people 'coz it makes them feel better. We all hope we'll be doing that soon.

Considering I was drinking out of the last chance puddle last year I reckon I've done quite a lot. And I've enjoyed too.

Being a Dane cross I'm not quite as petite as Lucy - now she is a cow; she eats as much as me and still manages to look like a whippet. One of the things that makes me laugh (though Kai isn't quite so amused) is that lots of humans think I'm a boy and he's a girl. A quick glance down under would put 'em right.

It's been a great year for me. I've learnt a lot and done a lot and I think become a nicer hound. I love living with the other Beasts and doing loads of things with them. One of my favourites is playing running games with Mack (yes, we are good friends now).

I want to thank everyone that helped me at the start and who has been nice to me and helped me along the way, and to say sorry to anyone who I might have been a bit short with at any time.

On the beach on my 2nd holiday - no muzzle

It last the last year is anything to go by there'll be lots more to do next year and I'm really looking forward to it.

PS Apologies to all Laurie Lee fans for the title of the post.

The First White Lodge Walk

Obviously it wasn't the first White Lodge Walk, but it was the first one in Northampton; yesterday The Beastly Beasts were very pleased to be hosts to our friends from Leicestershire at Salcey Forest, which as you all probably know is our usual walking venue.

We'd also let some of our local friends know we were going to be there and some of those came too; including Bungle - a Great Dane - who managed to do two things: make dad happy to see what he calls a proper size dog and make Rosie look quite petite :)

Bungle's mum is Mandy who runs Northants Greyhound Rescue; in our book that makes her a very very nice lady.

And Aunty Claire was there too. We haven't seen her since we went to Coombe Abbey so that was nice.

Some people nearly didn't make it; Sol's chauffeur, Aunty Alison, got lost and had to call dad to find the way. And for some it was the furthest they had come for ages - so a special thank you to them for coming down.

Usually we go off the beaten track in the forest, but yesterday we stayed on the paths and took everyone to the Tree Top Walk. You have to cross the bouncing bridge to get to it.

Then go up the slope to get to the top.

We had to walk almost single file up the walk to that people coming down could pass us, and that meant there was a big queue.

When you get to the top of the ramp there are some steps that go all the way to the top. We'd never been up them before as Jack and Troy don't like it up the Tree Walk anyway, but Rosie wanted - and did - go up and I followed her; it's a good view from up there I must say. A lady at the top though Rosie and I were very brave, though she mistook Rosie for a boy and me for a girl; me thinks she didn't do anatomy at school.

When we got to the bottom dad was stopped by a lady who thought Troy was beautiful and asked why there were so many greyhounds in one place. Of course she got the full story about greyhounds and what happens to many of them.

At this point we were joined by another of our friends, Fisher, who goes to the same school as Rosie. Then some went back for a cuppa and some of us carried on a bit more - needless to say all The Beastly Beasts carried on - before joining everyone at the cafe where, as always at the end of a walk, treats were to be had, including ice cream!!

And more of our friends were waiting for us there too; Josie and Curly with their mum and dad Ann and Norman had come over which was great.

We had a lovely afternoon; we love going to Salcey and it was brilliant to go their with so many friends and share it. We all hope that everyone that came had a nice time and will come back again. And there is loads more of the forest to go to if ever anyone wants a really long walk with us.
