"Given the numbers of greyhounds retiring from racing each year, it seems unlikely that all can be re-homed and therefore some euthanasia may be inevitable, as is accepted in the NGRC Rule 18 as a last resort. But it is important that this be done professionally and humanely."
"Some euthanasia" is about 50% of the dogs retiring each year - plus those that never make it to the track. And will it "be done professionally and humanely"? Highly unlikely given that all the safe guards will be administered by the industry itself; let's face it - they've not done a great job to date.
Personally we are totally against any animal dying for the sake of sport whether or not it is done "professionally and humanely". We believe that the industry should change it's business model such that fewer dogs are required to the point where no dog is destroyed before, during or after being used for racing. If such a business model does not prove sustainable the industry should cease to exist.
To base an "enterainment" industry on the blood of animals is immoral in this day and age.
